CROSS COUNTRY

PREBLE CROSS COUNTRY: A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE!!!

Please come as often as possible to our meets.  You will be able to appreciate the hard work your son or daughter has been doing, and your presence is a big boost to them even though they may not let you know it.  Cross Country parents are the greatest.  Let us get to know you.

CROSS COUNTRY BASICS

Meets are typically held on/in:
- School Grounds
- Parks
- Golf Courses

Length of courses:
- Girls- 4,000 meters (2.5 miles)
- Boys- 5,000 meters (3.1 miles)

Varsity- the top 7 or 8 runners on a team- usually designated by the previous meets times.
2nd Team Varsity (JV)- everyone else who is not involved in the varsity race.
Freshman- at the Manitowoc Invite there is a 9th grade and under division.  Most freshman will participate in this race unless they are designated Varsity or JV by the coaches.

HOW DO YOU SCORE THIS DARN THING?

Scoring is easy.  The LOW score wins.  In most meets each runner receives a number when they finish.  The first runner in receives no. 1, the second runner in no. 2, and so on.  The score for a team is based on the numbers of the first five runners in for that team so if your first five runners finished 1,3,8,11,15 – your team score would be 38. All of the other team runners act as pushers in helping to inflate the other teams scores by hopefully finishing in front of any of another teams first five runners.

The 1st team varsity race at the Finlan Relays is an exception to this.  Instead of all running at the same time, there will be staggered starts for the 1st team varsity.  All the no. 8 runners will run against each other, followed 5 minutes later by all the no. 7 runners. And so on all the way to the no. 1 runners.  The team score will be based on the finish of each runner within their group, so if all of a teams 8 varsity runners finished 1st in each of their races, that team would receive a perfect score of 8.  In regular meet scoring, a perfect score is 15 accomplished when your 1st five runners finish 1,2,3,4,5 for a total of 15.  Just when you thought you understood it, right?  All results will be posted at the meet.

Everyone runs in every meet- there are no cuts from the team.  All meets contain junior varsity and varsity divisions- some meets also have separate freshman divisions
